An engineering student died on Monday at a private hospital in Hyderabad after doctors attempted to abort her pregnancy that was more than 20 weeks old. Police filed a case against the doctors of Anusha Maternity Hospital and Nursing Home, since abortions cannot be carried out on foetuses older than 20 weeks unless allowed by a court. According to police, student and her partnerapproached the hospital for an abortion on August 5. Hospital superintendent agreed to perform the surgery and quoted a bill of Rs 20,000. The attempt failed and student suffered from excessive bleeding, prompting the staff to shift her to another maternity hospital at Dilsukhnagar, where she was declared brought dead. Student’s family members rushed to Anusha hospital and staged a dharna demanding action against the doctors for the botched abortion. “Irrespective of whether the affair between the girl and her boyfriend was legal or illegal, conducting abortion is a crime. We have booked a case under Section 312 and 314 of the IPC,” Vanasthalipuram police inspector S Murali Krishna told HT.
